Innovative metal products for medical devices at MD&M Minneapolis 2019

AMETEK Specialty Metal Products (SMP) will be showcasing its range of precision metal strip and foil, shaped wire, tubes and high purity powders at the Medical Design and Manufacturing (MD&M) at Booth 1405. The event takes place on 23 and 24 October 2019 at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, USA.

Taking a leading position on the AMETEK SMP booth will be examples of precision metal strip and foils. These are manufactured by Hamilton Precision Metals and AMETEK SMP Wallingford and used in critical medical applications, such as implantable enclosures, surgical tools, stents, PCBs, electronics and more. Alloys used include CP and alloyed titanium, as well as stainless steels including 316LS & SS420, MP35N® * and high purity nickel strip.

Titanium strip products are created with fine grain size for optimum drawability, surface finish and short lead-times. They can be reduced to gauges as thin as 7.5 microns and varying degrees of roughness to match exact specifications, e.g. for electrodes, cathodes and antennae applications.

AMETEK SMP will also be showcasing its shaped metal wire used in specialist applications including orthodontic brackets, toothbrush staples and superconductors in MRI machines. These shaped metal wires are designed and manufactured by AMETEK SMP Wallingford, which holds several patents in advanced metallurgical products and technology.

Additionally, the range of high purity titanium powders created by AMETEK SMP businesses are highly sought after for their biocompatible implant coatings used in total joint replacement devices that promote osseointegration. They are produced by Reading Alloys in high performance alloys including CP Ti, Ti 6A/4V and magnesium and sodium reduced titanium sponge.

Precision metal tubes are made by AMETEK SMP businesses, Fine Tubes and Superior Tube. They are commonly used for heart valves, pacemakers, stents, orthopaedics and instruments in high-performance stainless steel, titanium including Ti grade 5, and specialty alloys such as MP35N and 316V.
