Oil & gas drill bit bearing components & metal bushing materials from Pfinodal® UNS C72900 - composition of copper nickel tin alloys

Engineered Metal Components

Our sophisticated powder metallurgy process allows us to manufacture shaped components including net shapes, bar, plate, rod and tube. These custom-made components are used for critical applications in the mining and drilling, aerospace, electronics and industrial sectors.
Pfinodal® (UNS C72900)
We offer Pfinodal® (UNS C72900) as a replacement for Toughmet® UNS C72900 material and Beryllium Copper Alloys. AMETEK Specialty Metal Products obtained patents for its powder metallurgically produced product in 1983 and has been serving customers worldwide ever since. Key advantages include:
  • High hardness and strength
  • Non-magnetic properties required in bearing material
  • Low distortion during hardening allows for the complex forming of parts and shapes prior to heat treatment without the need for costly fixtures
  • Non-sparking and non-corrosive
  • Anti-Galling
  • Anti-Seizing
  • Excellent Ductility
  • Excellent Formability
  • Excellent Lubricity
  • Excellent Machinability
Safe Alternative to Beryllium Copper
Our Spinodal alloys including Pfinodal® (UNS C72900) and AM388™ (UNS C72650) offer similar mechanical properties to Beryllium Copper but without the harmful exposure risks. They heat treatable to high levels of hardness and tensile strength, and perform with less distortion than Beryllium Copper Alloys.
Net Shapes and Bar Products
Our process produces near net shapes and bar products in a variety of alloys through the use of Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) and Pneumatic Isostatic Forging (PIF) to create wrought products.
Manufacturing Process
The process begins with chemistry-controlled powders that are consolidated to oversized shapes through the CIP process. These products are then processed through a high temperature sinter and then fully consolidated through the PIF process. Our patented process translates to superb metallurgical properties combined with low costs and the shortest processing lead-time in the industry.
Bearing Materials for Tri-Cone Drill Bits
The CIP/PIF process has leant itself to the production of bearing materials. The consolidation of Pfinodal® (UNS C72900) has been used in market-leading tri-cone drill bits for over 20 years and continues to expand into new down-hole applications due to its well-suited characteristics. Pfinodal® (UNS C72900) delivers specific physical properties that are highly advantageous for demanding rock bit bearing applications, including excellent corrosion resistance for extended drill bit bearing life.
Other Applications
The success of our copper nickel tin alloy, Pfinodal® (UNS C72900), in down-hole bearing materials and bearing components has led to the development of the product for additional applications such as:
In Demand
This batch processing is also in demand for products such as high purity nickel bar products for x-ray equipment in the healthcare industry, magnetic materials for instrumentation, and custom alloyed sputtering targets.
