Pfinodal® and AM-388® strip as replacement for Copper Beryllium strip | produced from wrought powder metallurgy

Spinodal Alloy Strip

We offer two Spinodal alloy grades produced through the same wrought powder metallurgy as copper based products with nickel and tin additions. Our Pfinodal® (C72900) and AM 388® (C72650) spinodal materials deliver similar mechanical properties to Beryllium Copper alloy (C17200) but without the carcinogenic exposure risks. Advantages include:
  • No carcinogenic elements - only copper/nickel/tin
  • Ductile state and heat treatable
  • Electrically conductive
  • Reduced distortion during heat treatment
  • Reduced stress relaxation
Safe Alternative to Beryllium Copper (UNS C17200)
Recently, Pfinodal® and AM-388® have been chosen as a replacement for Beryllium Copper due to the carcinogenic effects of Beryllium and fears of bans on Beryllium containing products due to REACH, RoHS, and OSHA mandates. Spinodal materials are gaining acceptance in new projects as well as legacy qualifications as manufacturers, OEMs, and consumers reject products with carcinogenic materials such as Beryllium. Spinodal copper nickel tin materials are conductive, spring-tempered, and have improved dimensional stability to Alloy 25.
Low Distortion
Our Spinodal materials exhibit great spring properties in the hardened tempers. The low distortion during hardening allows for complex forming of parts prior to heat treatment without the need for costly fixtures. Stamped parts in the forms of spring clips and electronic contacts can be processed in the ductile form for intricate parts and then heat treated to finish with high hardness and tensile properties.
High Hardness
These materials can be roll tempered to desired mechanical properties but also avail themselves to age hardening for increased strength and hardness making them ideal for bearing materials as well as electrical connectors. Spinodal alloys offer a non-sparking and non-magnetic alternative to Beryllium containing materials with similar mechanical and electrical properties.

Description
AMETEK 377 PFINODAL® (C72900) competes with beryllium-copper for many electrical applications where high strength and excellent formability without dimensional instability are required.

AMETEK 388 Spinodal (C72650) offers high conductivity and strength for connectors, sockets, bearings, and switches.
Advantages
  • High strength and excellent formability without dimensional instability
  • Highly resistant to shrinkage and warpage – up to 10x more than BeCu
  • Excellent solderability and resistance to intermetallic formation at high temperature
  • Excellent corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning
  • Lower initial cost and processing cost savings
  • High conductivity (Spinodal 388®)
